    Iraqi Kurdistan, the self-governing, northern part of Iraq, stands out from the rest of the country as a place of peace and calm. It is also a place where parks form an integral part of the local social life. More than just areas of green open space, most are filled with recreational activities like miniature theme parks, boating lakes and children’s playgrounds. This small theme park is in the Pank Resort, a plush holiday complex high up in the snowy mountains that separate Iraqi Kurdistan from Iran and Turkey. (Stuart Butler)
