    It is easy to miss the humanity of a city best known for high-gloss couture and avant-garde design, but slip past the initial reserve of this proud Italian metropolis and you will find a city with a passionate heart. Milan’s landmark cathedral, the Duomo, started construction in 1386 and took more than 500 years to complete. Today, it is known for its mix of architectural styles — from Gothic to Baroque — and for housing more than 3,000 statues.
