Irreverent responses from our favourite travel ninjas.

Name: Dave and Deb
Title/bio: Canada’s adventure couple

Born in: Canada
Currently living in: A car en route to Mongolia

1. Where would you rather be right now?
In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Right now we are writing from the road in Kazakhstan, driving a car from England to Mongolia. We love Kazakhstan, but we still have thousands of miles ahead of us and we know that the road conditions are just going to get worse. If we were in Ulaanbaatar, we would know that we made it!

2 Tourist must-see you think is actually a “must skip”:
Taj Mahal – India has so many amazing structures and the Taj Mahal is one big tourist trap. Go to the Golden Palace in Amritsar instead.

3. Everyone asks what’s #1 on your list of places you want to go before you die. But what’s your #3?
Rwanda. We have wanted to go to Rwanda for some time now, unfortunately other countries keep popping into our minds to visit, knocking it out of first place. It may take us a while to get there, but it is always in our top three.

4. You’d be mortified if people knew you did what when you travelled?
Stop at as many upscale coffee shops as we do. We may be on a budget, but we’ll gladly pay $4 for a latte while sitting in air conditioning.

5. Your most stranded, “oh-my-[deity]” travel moment:
We were new to travel when our truck that we hired broke down at dusk at the top of Bokor Hill in Cambodia. We were paranoid of the jungle, landmines and animals, and we were going to have to walk down the mountain in the dark. After a couple of hours, our driver decided to coast down the mountain instead while we sat in the back bouncing around, praying that we didn't go off the road.

6. Strangest meal abroad:
Snake stew in Vietnam, complete with snake wine.

7. If someone was visiting your town, what’s the one thing you’d show them?
We’d show them the Niagara Escarpment. It is 40 minutes outside of Toronto and has great rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking. It’s a fun adventure playground close to the city.

8. Travel-related invention you wish existed:
Teleporting. With the way security is in airports these days, we hate flying. (Unless we could go business class every day. That would be great) If we could get to our destination instantly, life would be much easier.

9. Your most embarrassing travel faux pas:
Carrying our dive gear, complete with wetsuits and heavy BCDs, backpacking all around Central America. We looked like idiots.

10. Material thing you miss the most when away from home:
Ice cubes.

11. Most unique souvenir:
Blow dart from Borneo complete with darts. It sits on top of the fireplace…when we have a fireplace that is.

12. Best celebrity encounter while travelling:
Ian Redmond in India. He was the Ambassador for the UN Year of the Gorilla in 2009 and was Sigourney Weaver’s consultant for Gorilla’s in the Mist, teaching her how to understand her character, Dian Fossey. Redmond was with Fossey in Africa studying mountain gorillas, and helped Sir David Attenborough film the acclaimed BBC series Life of Mammals.

13. Most unusual item you have travelled with:
Gold Bond Powder – It goes with us everywhere and it may be unusual, but it is oh so soothing.

14. Coolest mode of transport you’ve taken:
So many to choose from, but we’ll go with camels in Jordan. They were cooler than camels in India or Egypt because we pretended we were actually Lawrence of Arabia since Wadi Rum was his old stomping grounds.

15. Travel-related film or book that inspires you to pack your bags:
Since we are Canadian, we are going with the film One Week starring Joshua Jackson of Fringe and Dawson’s Creek fame. No movie makes us want to get on a motorbike and ride across our great country more than One Week!

16. Lay on us a priceless bit of travel advice or wisdom:
Try something you’ve never done before in every place you visit. It will turn your vacation into an adventure.
