A bi-weekly round-up of new hotels and hideaways, treks and tours.
Square Hotel opens 18 June in London’s Marylebone neighbourhood,
near Regent’s Park. Stamped firmly with owner Kit Kemp’s bold design sense, all
36 rooms and suites are furnished with unique fabrics and textiles and
decorated with one-off pieces of furniture and art. The Drawing Room and Potting
Shed Bar and Restaurant will serve British fare for meals and afternoon tea.
On 1 June, the waterfront Eastern Mangroves Hotel and Spa by Anantara opened
in Abu Dhabi with 222 rooms and suites in a newly-built residential and marina
district five minutes from downtown. The hotel incorporates Emirati elements
such as majlis (entertaining rooms),
and the Anantara Spa houses a 1,420sqft hammam.
The SLS Hotel South Beach
opens 7 June near the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall in Miami. An original 1939
Art Deco building, the hotel has been designed by Philippe Starck, and inspiration
for the public areas range from Portofino, a small Italian fishing village, to
summer camp chic, while the rooms and suites are a nod to Louis XV and his
mistress, Madame de Pompadour. Top chef José Andrés is responsible for the main
restaurant, The Bazaar.
In South America, the Palacio
Nazarenas opens in Cuzco, Peru, on 15 June with 55 suites in a
restored convent off the city’s main square. The library houses archaeological
treasures found during the renovation, and rooms have views of the surrounding
Andes Mountains. Since Cuzco is at 11,000ft above sea level, extra oxygen can
be pumped in via the air conditioning upon request.
Also on 15 June, Chapman House
opens in Nantucket, Massachusetts, with 11 rooms in a building dating from 1717.
The hotel, a sister property to The Veranda House around the corner, is done up
in New England chic tones of white and gray. The Beach Concierge can choose one
of the island’s many unspoiled beaches for you to visit, plus organise
transport, a picnic lunch and other accoutrements for a day by the sea.
