In the wake of reports of the torture and killing of a 13-year-old boy by the Syrian security forces, the Australian government has become the first to call for the Syrian leader President Basher al-Assad himself to be referred to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. The death of the young boy - and disturbing video pictures of his fate - has prompted the Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd to call for the UN Security Council to refer Syrian ruler, President Bashar al-Assad to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.Mr Rudd, said that the Syrian government's actions against its own people and the murder and torture of the boy, raised "the deepest question" about the legitimacy of the Syrian authorities. In the wake of the boy's death the US government too is raising the rhetorical pressure. US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton now publicly wondering if Mr Assad's grip on power is weakening.
