Nina was born in 1974 in Sutton Coldfield, but grew up in Tunbridge Wells, Kent where she attended the Weald of Kent Grammar School for Girls. On leaving school she spent 9 months travelling solo in India, Australia and America. She then went to Leeds University and gained a BSc in Mathematics with Management Studies. Whilst at University she was a keen member of the Officer Training Corps where she met her husband John.
After completing her BSc she went to Bristol University and completed a PGCE in Mathematics and Games. She then moved back to Tunbridge Wells and taught secondary school maths and physical education for just over two years. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and became fully involved in school life, also being the Duke of Edinburgh co-ordinator and running a number of school ski trips.
She joined the Met Office in December 2000 hoping to find new challenges and after studying an intensive four month training programme at the Met Office college joined the BBC in April 2001. The training included the IFC meteorology foundation course at the Met Office as well as broadcast meteorology training at the BBC Weather Centre. She began broadcasting in November 2001 and now broadcasts across a range of BBC channels including BBC ONE. Nina enjoys all sports in particular and is a very keen skier, also playing netball and tennis. She and her husband have recently had a baby daughter.
