About the BBC Weather Centre

Farewell Helen Young
Helen Willetts 'Best Weather Presenter'

Tomasz Schafernaker was born in Gdansk, Poland but has lived and attended school both in the UK and his home country. He developed a keen interest in the weather and natural sciences at a young age and, despite his strongest abilities in the arts he proceeded onto obtaining a BSc degree in meteorology from Reading University. During his studies he spent a short time at Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences analysing tropical weather data.

After a long holiday in Southeast Asia in 2000, Tomasz joined the BBC Weather Centre as a Broadcast Assistant. He became the youngest male to present regional BBC Weather forecasts at the age of 22. One of his roles was to work as "mobile-weathercaster" proving cover for ten BBC television stations around the UK including BBC Tunbridge Wells, Southampton, Wales, Leeds and Newcastle. This gave him a good grounding in presenting and from winter 2003 he spent he some months presenting international weather forecasts for BBC World.

Between 2004 and 2005 Tomasz undertook further meteorological training with the Met Office College in Exeter. This included exams and 8 months of training as an aviation weather forecaster at RAF Lyneham. Finally, Tomasz gained more experience by working as a civil weather forecaster at the Met Office's regional weather centre in London as well as ITV. He has since returned to the BBC and will be now seen on News24, BBCi as well as BBC World.

Tomasz lives in west London with his two housemates, he enjoys jogging and his local gym. He frequently travels to Gdansk but he also loves the climate of south Florida and one day would wish to live in the surrounds of palm trees and tropical weather where highs reach the "90s"!
