The Respect the Mountain Campaign was launched at the start of the winter 2004/5 season following the introduction by the Ski Club of an environmental policy.

The policy is aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues with regard to snowsports, and gives advice on how to help preserve the mountains with a seven-step guide, which can be found on our Climate and Snowsports page.

Since its launch, the 'Respect the Mountain' Campaign has grown and the 2005/6 winter season sees the introduction of an environmental database on the Ski Club website.

The Ski Club needed to inform skiers and snowboarders on the effect of climate change, with the worrying trend of rising average temperatures and changing snow patterns. By using the Green Resort Guide when undertaking ski holiday research, Skiers and boarders can now make decisions about where to go based on the environmental activities of a resort.

The environmental database provides important information for skiers and boarders on what the resorts are doing to help protect the environment, ranking their performance on different criteria including recycling, green power, traffic reduction and building policy.

"We hope this guide will educate skiers, snowboarders, and the snowsports industry."
On the introduction of the database, Caroline Stuart-Taylor, Chief Executive of the Ski Club, said "By providing skiers and boarders with an environmental guide, we hope to drive up standards by highlighting the resorts that are doing a lot to help preserve the environment, as well as those that aren't doing much at all. We hope this guide will educate skiers, snowboarders, and the snowsports industry."

After a successful first season, The Ski Club was presented with the Lucy Dicker award for the 'Respect the Mountain' campaign. The Lucy Dicker award acknowledges innovation and outstanding contribution to the ski industry.

This award-winning campaign has made major steps since it launched in 2004, and has given important advice to many skiers and boarders alike, in helping to preserve the mountains.
