Wind Projects and Activities
There are lots of projects related to wind speed and direction. You can build a lot of the instruments yourself (look at things to do).

Investigate why the wind does what it does!

What is 'Gustiness'
With a simple ventimeter (for example, a Dwyer windmeter or a Ventimeter) record the wind speed every 5 seconds for a period of say 10 minutes. Plot these measurements on a simple graph; the variability is an indication of the 'gustiness' (turbulence) of the wind. Compare windspeed and gustiness in two different locations; in a clear area with few objects upwind, and in a built up area (the middle of a housing estate, for example.

Investigate the way in which wind speed depends upon height above the ground. Measure at, say, 30cm, 1m and 3m. Simple flap-type anemometers or ventimeters / windmeters can be used for this, but cup anemometers are much better. How does the wind speed profile differ over different surfaces; smooth grass, rough pasture, heather or bracken? Because wind speed varies so much from one minute to the next, it is important to measure the windspeed at each height at the same time, i.e. using 2 or 3 anemometers.
