Extreme weather across China by Rob McElwee

Over the past few days China has been hit by extreme weather; intense heat and heavy rain. Eastern parts of China are reeling under a heat wave, with the local government issuing a high temperature warning for a number of regions.

In Shanghai, temperatures on Friday rose to their highest so far this year, reaching 37.8C (100F) in the centre of the city. During the summer months temperatures normally climb to 32C (90F), with 40C (104F) being the highest ever recorded.

While eastern provinces reel under the heat, further rain has been lashing southern regions, causing widespread floods. According to the National Meteorological Centre (NMC), further rain is forecast for northern China and much of the south over the next week. Precipitation in these areas is expected to be 20-50% higher than normal, with some places receiving double their normal rainfall totals.

Over the past few weeks China has been hit by torrential rain, with Typhoon Fengshen causing flooding and landslides across southern China.
