Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today John and Louay talk about a problem facing police forces in the UK.

Even though police work has been increasing, the number of detectives has not.

This means that there is a lot more work for detectives to do, and this could affect crime fighting here in the UK.

Police forces have been trying to recruit new detectives, but it seems that the job is not attractive as it once was.

Roger Graef, a criminologist, told the BBC that being a detective these days is more of a desk job than one involving chasing after criminals in fast cars.

Roger said that the job now involves financial skills, and detectives have to do things like go through bank statements and phone bills to get the information they need.

He also said that crime has broadened, and now a lot of crime is 'invisible'.

But crime will not disappear and if the police are to fight crime effectively, they will need detectives.

Hopefully some young men and women will still want to be detectives even though it is not as glamorous as they might hope!
