Today is the first anniversary of President Obama’s inauguration as President of the United States.

Following his inauguration, many Americans hoped Obama would bring change to the country.

Now, after the president’s first year in the Whitehouse, opinion polls show Americans are deeply divided in their views.

The poll shows a big drop in Obama’s popularity over the past twelve months.

When Obama first became president, around 75% of Americans thought he would bring change, whereas now only 50% think that has happened.

BBC reporter Mark Mardell spoke to some black Americans in Chicago, Obama’s hometown, about their feelings towards the president.

One resident, hairdresser Antonio, told the BBC that a lot of his clients seem to be losing their jobs in the current economy, but that he blames the previous government for America’s problems:

I put the blame on the prior administration, and by the time we start feeling the effects of President Obama and what he wanted to do, he’s going to be out of office. It takes a while.
