<span xml:lang="en"><paragraph role="introduction">Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!</paragraph><paragraph>This week is the 100th anniversary of Thomas Crapper, one of England's most famous plumbers.</paragraph><paragraph>Even though a lot of people think that he invented the toilet, Thomas Crapper actually did not invent the toilet.</paragraph><paragraph>The toilet was around before Thomas Crapper, but during his time, it was not seen as polite to talk about toilets.</paragraph><paragraph>Instead of staying quiet, Thomas Crapper promoted toilets and began improving them, patenting a number of different inventions for them.</paragraph><paragraph>He also received royal warrants from two Kings, King Edward VII and King George V for installing and maintaining their toilets.</paragraph><paragraph>There is also another link to Thomas Crapper and that is the slang English word for excrement: crap!</paragraph><paragraph>Whilst it sounds similar to Crapper, crap is actually an old English word that means rubbish.</paragraph><paragraph>So sometimes slang English words do have a historical meaning to them!</paragraph><paragraph>How important are toilets to you?
