Two actors try out lines from two different films, one a romantic comedy and the other a fantasy, as part of an audition. They act out the scenes in turn and discuss how each film has portrayed the strong female lead. They identify how word choices, intention, character, dialogue and setting are used and how these link to genre. They identify similarities and differences between the two scripts. Spoiler alert – they both get the parts!
Could be used to show to students how different texts can have a point of similarity that is created in different ways. So in this case both texts have a strong female lead but because of the difference in genres this is created using different vocabulary, setting and dialogue. Watch the clip having told students they are to write a comparative paragraph based on the text analysis the clip contains. Use the detail to write an ‘Although both texts………they are different because … In the first text… In the second text …. ‘ paragraph.
