How do magnets help in a scrapyard? A car is made up of many different materials. When a car is scrapped, the different types of metals need to be sorted. A huge rotating magnet is used to sort the magnetic materials from the non-magnetic materials. Separating the materials allows them to be reused.

Could be used to demonstrate how industrial magnets are used as part of a wider topic on magnetic forces. Pupils could be asked how they think magnets work in a practical session. Following the clip, pupils could research which materials are magnetic or not and undertake some separation activities in the classroom using small magnets. Further research could be done on how conveyor belts and shredders work. It would also be useful to link this with the topic ‘Earth and space’ and analyse the magnetic force of Earth and its effects.
