An introduction to the concept of mode with a practical demonstration. Children are playing a 'horse racing game' involving counters and dice. After each roll of the dice, the corresponding 'horse' is moved up the board. At the end of the game the winner is identified as the modal number - the number that occurred most frequently.
Children could be given their own dice to roll and record scores in a table, identifying the modal number of each set. An extension activity could be to find out children's shoe sizes in the class, recording them in a table and finding the most frequent shoe size. Similar investigations could also be conducted to find out the modal hand span, wake up time, family size or height.
