A look at a range of day-to-day examples of separating liquids and solids. This is something that we regularly do with the help of a sieve or filter. Examples include fish being caught in a net, spaghetti being drained in a colander, chips being lifted out of fat using a basket, a dishwasher filter, and a coffee filter.
This clip is useful as a discussion tool - can the children think of any other examples of when they need to separate solids and liquids? The children could be provided with one large mixture of solids of different sizes including salt within a pot of coloured liquid. The children could use what they have seen within the clip to attempt to separate all the solids from the liquid. Using salt within the mixture will question the children's knowledge further.
