How to measure the length of a piece of wood, a python and a football pitch. The approximation of length is discussed before a demonstration of how to record the measurement using different units: centimetres, metres and kilometres. Different tools are used for the measurements: a ruler, a tape measure and a trundle wheel.

This clip can be used to inspire a practical lesson where pupils are given the opportunity to use different tools to measure a range of items. Pupils could be instructed to think logically and choose the most appropriate tool for measuring each listed object. They could then go around the classroom and complete this task, recording their results. Any major disparity in each pupil's findings could provide an opportunity to assess learning and see if and where mistakes are being made.
