Olympic Gold medallist Nicola Adams encourages participation in boxing and boxercise. BBC Presenter Jess Creighton meets the best known female boxer in the world, at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, home of GB boxing’s successful Olympic team. Jess learns that Nicola wants girls of all ages and abilities to get involved in boxing, a sport they may not have thought of before. She also wants girls to enjoy the benefits of boxing’s many disciplines and its exceptional fitness training. Nicola talks about her own career and what originally drew her to the sport of boxing, after she accidentally got involved as a youngster. The champion also explains what the sport has done for her in terms of life skills, fitness, organisation, inter-personal skills, making friends and that it has given her recognition and a celebrity status, although she still doesn’t like getting hit! We next see Nicola take a 'boxercise session' at a local primary school in her home town of Leeds. Nicola demonstrates the many skills needed for boxing training and fitness, such as skipping, fast foot movement and various punching techniques on pads, all in an enjoyable and safe non-contact training environment.
Students could discuss a time when they were proud of something they'd achieved. What made them proud? Why were they proud? Boxing in a ring may not be for everyone, so students could look at the many different aspects of boxing which you can do such as; boxercise or skipping. What barriers may be in the way for girls wanting to take part in sport? What reasons could students give other girls to make them want to take part in sports?
