Adverbs are used to describe verbs. They can describe where, how and how often something happens and in what manner an action is done. Or put another way, it gives more information about the verb, eg:

  • ich tue es gern – I do it gladly/I'll happily do it
  • sie rennt schnell – she runs quickly

Adverbs are short phrases or words which can be added to sentences to give more information about the action.

Adverbs tell us:
  • when or how often something happens, eg sometimes, every year, at Christmas, etc
  • how the action is done, eg slowly, badly, etc - including what the person doing the action thinks of it
  • where it takes place, eg at school, in the shop, in Austria, etc
