Comparative adjectives

A comparative adjective compares one thing to another, eg bigger, taller, more energetic.

  • Mein Bruder ist größer als ich. – My brother is taller than me.
  • Wir sind aktiver als die andere Mannschaft. – We are more active than the other team.
  • Die Mädchen sind fleißiger als die Jungen. – The girls are more hard-working than the boys.

How to form a comparative adjective

Forming a comparative adjective is very easy in German, as it's so similar to how we form comparatives in English.

  1. Take an adjective or adverb: laut (loud), schnell (fast).
  2. Add an -er to the end of the adjective or adverb: laut > lauter (louder), schnell > schneller (faster). Some one-syllable words are irregular and also add an umlaut to the internal vowel, eg groß > größer (bigger), dumm > dümmer (dumber).
  3. Put your comparative adjective or adverb in a sentence and use the word als (than) to complete the comparison > Paul ist lauter als Peter (Paul is louder than Peter).
