What is a pronoun?

A pronoun replaces a noun. Look at this example:

Paul likes Karin.

Paul is a noun and so is Karin.

If we use pronouns, we can do any of the following:

  • replace Paul with the pronoun he > He likes Karin
  • replace Karin with the pronoun her > Paul likes her
  • replace both > He likes her

These are called personal pronouns.
