Course assessment

AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC exam boards

For AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC, GCSE Art and Design is assessed as two components:

Component one: Portfolio

The portfolio is made up of preparatory studies leading to a fully resolved response, or group of responses. The portfolio represents 60% of the final mark.

Component two: Externally set assignment

The externally set assignment is based on preparatory study that leads to a ten hour period of sustained focus in which you will produce a response to a chosen theme, brief, problem or task. This assignment represents 40% of your final mark.

CCEA exam board (pre-2017)

If you started the CCEA GCSE qualification in 2016, the qualification is made up of the following:

Unit One: Core portfolio

The core portfolio should show experience of at least two different creative media. It should show breadth, depth and quality of work and include one task that has been developed to a final outcome. The portfolio represents 60% of the final mark.

Unit Two: Working to a stimulus

Unit two is based on creating a final outcome based on a provided stimulus. The final outcome must be completed within a set period of 10 hours under controlled test conditions. This assignment represents 40% of your final mark.

CCEA exam board (from 2017)

If you started the CCEA GCSE qualification in September 2017, your work will be assessed as two components:

Component one: Part A: Portfolio

The portfolio is made up of preparatory studies leading to a fully resolved response, or group of responses. The portfolio represents 25% of the final mark.

Component one: Part B: Investigating the creative and cultural industries

The investigation into the creative and cultural industries involves either:

  • a personal response based on investigating an artist, designer, movement or other aspect of art and design
  • responding to a design brief or visual arts commission
  • taking on a clearly defined role in a collaborative project leading to a clear outcome for personal assessment

This investigation represents 35% of the final mark.

Component two: Externally set assignment

The externally set assignment is based on preparatory study that leads to a ten hour period of sustained focus in which you produce a response to a chosen theme, brief, problem or task. This assignment represents 40% of your final mark.
