Non-fiction is prose writing based on the real world and reality.

Features of non-fiction are:

  • it is made to engage the reader’s attention quickly
  • it is often multi-purposed, aiming to explain, review, advise, inform or often, to persuade
  • it is not usually colourfully descriptive and has no narrator
  • it can have speech, shown inside quotation marks
  • like all prose writing, it uses sentences, margins and paragraphs
  • it comes in many forms or genres including information leaflets, newspapers, travel-writing, biographies, blogs and reviews

Non-fiction texts can be divided into six main types:

  1. information texts
  2. recount texts
  3. instruction texts
  4. explanation texts
  5. persuasion texts
  6. argument texts
