Warm-up task 1: Useful questions on leisure activities

Listen to the questions. Repeat them and translate them into English. Reveal the answer to check your translation and to find suggestions on how you could reply.

1. Que fais-tu normalement quand tu as du temps libre ?

What do you normally do when you have free time?

In your reply, you can use a variety of present tense verbs:

  • je fais du sport - I do sport
  • je fais de l’équitation - I go horseriding
  • je joue au basket - I play basketball
  • je m’entraîne - I train
  • je lis - I read

What sports do you do?

As well as using the present tense, you can use adverbs of time and frequency:

  • trois fois par semaine - three times a week
  • tous les jours - every day
  • souvent - often
  • quelquefois - sometimes

In your reply, you can use a range of opinion phrases:

  • mon sport préféré est… - my favourite sport is
  • j’aime bien - I really like

In your reply, you can use a variety of past tense verbs:

Describe the last time you went to or participated in a sporting event.

In your reply, you can use a variety of verbs in the past tense:

  • je suis allé(e) à - I went to
  • j’ai participé à - I took part in
  • j’ai assisté à - I attended
  • j’ai vu un/une/des - I saw a/some
  • c’était impressionnant - it was impressive
  • c’était décevant - it was disappointing

As well as using opinion phrases, you can use comparatives and a range of connectives to explain your opinion:

  • plus...que - more...than
  • moins…que - less…than
  • aussi...que - as...as
  • parce que - because
  • cependant - however
  • mais - but
  • d’un côté…, de l’autre côté… - on the one hand…, on the other hand…

This is a chance to use the conditional tense:

  • j’aimerais - I would like
  • je voudrais - I would like
  • je jouerais - I would play
  • je ferais - I would do
