What are direct object pronouns: me, te, le?

An explanation of direct object pronouns and how they can replace the object of a sentence

A direct object pronoun replaces a noun that is the object in a sentence, for example:

  • I throw the ball → I throw it

The direct object pronouns in French are:

The pronoun comes before all parts of the verb:

  • j'aime les légumes (I like vegetables) → je les aime (I like them)
  • nous avons mangé les gâteaux de ta mère (we ate your mother's cakes) → nous les avons mangés (we ate them)
