A look at the Covent Garden mechanical toy shop, which makes mechanical moving toys. We see one of the toys being made and consider how a toy can be made to move without electricity.

First broadcast:
8 October 2007

This clip can be used to demonstrate to children the opening to their DT work on moving toys, where the children could identify where each of the toys are being pushed, pulled or turned. The teacher could pause at each new toy so that the children could discuss with their partner or have a picture similar to the toy on screen to write push, pull or turn next to. This clip is also useful for the children to be taught key vocabulary of push, pull, wind power, knock and drop. The teacher could pause the clip 30 seconds from the end and look at the stretch toy and discuss with the class how the twist toy is working and being powered, similarly with the last 5 toys before the clip concludes.
