Reporter Mark Simpson breaks the news of the sinking of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. An insert describes the ship, the details of its route and passenger numbers. A correspondent in America gives a more detailed report with information about the collision with an iceberg, and the emergency operation. Details are given about some of the passengers and crew, and we see footage of relatives arriving at the White Star Line offices in the hope of more information.

This clip could be used to compile a radio news programme. Students could write headlines and make a note of the different aspects of the disaster they might report on. They could include a summary of Charles Lightoller's account of the event and write links for presenter(s) to introduce all the elements. They could deliver the programme 'live' in the class with a presenter reading the links to the newsreader and reporters.
