Encourage students to use charcoal to create quick, expressive drawings. They should concentrate on looking at their composition in detail before capturing it with quick, bold lines. They could even try drawing using a single line, without taking their charcoal off of the paper. Students could create drawings using several of the tools and techniques shown in the clip. They could draw each other or a group of objects, using both charcoal and graphite, and incorporating some of the smudging methods demonstrated. Afterwards, they could write an explanation of how they drew the different aspects and textures in the drawings, what material they used, why they chose that material, and whether it worked as they hoped.
