In the third of BBC Future’s Imagineering redesigns, electronics giant Philips show how they would radically rethink the humble bus stop – using smartphone apps and wifi to create a much more dynamic and flexible transport system.

Most city dwellers have a love/hate relationship with the bus services they use. Even short trips can sometimes take ages, as almost empty buses trundle along fixed routes, while traffic problems can add further delays and frustration.

But could the bus of the future be hailed not from a plastiglass bus shelter but from anywhere on a city street – thanks to the smartphone in your pocket?

Designers based in Philips' Singapore studio illustrate the concept behind their redesigned bus stop – one that goes far beyond a physical transformation and changes the very way buses move around our cities.
