If Earth’s spin reversed, everything would be different

What would happen if our planet suddenly started turning the opposite way, or slowed to a crawl? One thing is for sure, it wouldn’t be a smooth outcome for civilisation, as the animation above explains.

This animation was inspired by BBC Radio 4’s The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry.

Listen to the full episode or subscribe to the podcast, in which Hannah Fry quizzes cosmologist Andrew Pontzen about the birth of the Solar System and why everything in space seems to spin. Is there anything in the Universe that doesn't revolve? And BBC weatherman John Hammond explains to Adam Rutherford how the rotation of the Earth creates our weather systems and the strange things that would happen if we spun the opposite way.
