French rules married lesbians can adopt their partner's children

The highest court in France has decided that married lesbian women can adopt their partner's children born through artificial fertilisation or other medically assisted means.

Lower courts had earlier ruled against such adoption rights, which had not been included in the bill that legalised same-sex marriages last year.

Medically assisted reproduction is in France limited to heterosexual couples, and married lesbian couples have had to travel abroad treatment.

The issue is still controversial, and conservative opponents of same-sex marriage are planning protests against the ruling.
