Man 'tried to handcuff pensioner'

Police have appealed for witnesses after a man tried to put a handcuff on a pensioner's wrist in a wooded area of West Lothian.

The 89-year-old was between Ochiltree Crescent and the dual carriageway in Mid Calder at about about 1320 BST on Wednesday when he became aware of a man walking behind him.

The man, described as in his early 30s, then attempted to put a metal handcuff on him.

The pensioner warned the man off.

The suspect, who is described as clean-shaven with a medium build, fled in the direction of Ochiltree Crescent.

He was wearing jeans and a grey top, spoke with a local accent and was carrying a blue plastic bag.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This is a very unusual incident and it is not clear what the male's intentions were.

"Anyone who perhaps seen this man in the Ochiltree area and can assist us in locating him should contact police immediately."
