A 35-year-old man has died after stripping off and jumping into a river for a swim, say South Wales Police.

Officers said he got into difficulty after removing his clothes and jumping into the water at Bridge Street, Troedyrhiw, Merthyr, on Saturday.

Two youths went into the water after him, pulled him out and, with another man, tried to resuscitate him.

Paramedics were called at 1705 BST and he was taken to Prince Charles Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances. The coroner has been informed.
