Crews tackle big grass fires near Newport and Bridgend


Firefighters in south Wales have tackled two large grass fires near Newport and Bridgend.

In the first, on Wednesday morning on Twmbarlwn Mountain in Risca, fire crews battled for more than 11 hours to control a blaze, which stretched across about 7.4 acres (3 ha).

Later in the day at about 1340 BST, 10 acres (4 ha) of grass and gorse were destroyed at Bryncethin, near Bridgend.

Crews from six stations were involved, along with a helicopter.

Firefighters said they were returning to the scene of the Risca fire on Thursday morning to investigate the cause.
