Plans for new £1.4m arts centre in North Hykeham
A new £1.4m arts facility is to be built in Lincolnshire.
The Expressive Arts Centre will be built in the grounds of North Kesteven School, a specialist school in performing arts, at North Hykeham.
The centre, due to open in September 2011, would include a 60-seat lecture theatre, dance studio, media suite and outdoor performance area.
Mike Lock, from North Kesteven District Council, said the new centre would be opened up for community use.
He said: "It complements the school in the curriculum but from the community's point of view it will engage with a wide age range of the community.
"There'll be lots of young people coming in after school, we're got a theatre group that's already well established and that will be based in this new facility so it'll meet a number of community needs."
He said there were plans to ask local people how they felt it could best be used.
Martin Connor, head teacher of North Kesteven School, said a lot of the development's funding came from money already allocated to the school through Devolved Formula Capital.
He added: "What [the new facility] gives to students is tremendous confidence, enhances the other aspects of their curriculum and we find here that we have students who are positive, engage with school, achieve great success.
"Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, that comes primarily through their drama, their dance and their ability to create things."
