Cambridgeshire hospital's service for terminally ill

A new care service for people nearing the end of their life has been set up at a hospital in Cambridgeshire.

Patients can be cared for at home or at a fortnightly clinic at Doddington Hospital.

The service was brought in after patients spoke of the need for palliative care during a consultation by NHS Cambridgeshire last year.

It means people in south Fenland no longer have to travel long distances to see a consultant, the trust said.

The clinics, staffed by a GP and a palliative care consultant, will offer advice and support.

The team will also act as an advisory group to medical practices, NHS Cambridgeshire added.

Dr Margaret Saunders, a consultant in palliative medicine, said: "This important new service will enable us to provide additional support and guidance... relieving symptoms and increasing quality of life wherever possible."
