Residents were evacuated from their homes on Thursday night after a pipe bomb attack in Londonderry.

The bomb exploded inside a VW Passat car in the Springtown Road area of the city shortly before midnight on Thursday.

The rear window of the car was smashed and the pipe bomb thrown inside.

A number of homes were evacuated as army bomb experts were called to the scene. The security alert is now over and there were no reports of injuries.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
