Golfer Colin Montgomerie says sorry for marriage strain
European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has admitted putting his marriage "under considerable strain".
The 46-year-old Scot issued a statement after a newspaper reported he had been seeing a former girlfriend.
The Daily Mirror said the relationship was over and Montgomerie, who was married for the second time two years ago, was battling to save his marriage.
Montgomerie said he was "very sorry" for the hurt he had caused and said he was "working through" his problems.
The Daily Mirror claimed that the eight-time European number one, whose 14-year first marriage ended in divorce in 2004, had confessed to wife Gaynor that he had been having "a secret affair with his ex-lover Joanne Baldwin".
Montgomerie is playing in the Wales Open this week at Celtic Manor, the course near Newport, the venue where he will lead Europe's attempt to win back the Ryder Cup from the Americans in October.
He married Gaynor at Loch Lomond in April 2008 and they set up home together in Perthshire.
