A mural on the back of Free Derry wall has been damaged in two separate overnight fires.

Pictures of Kieran Doherty, who was murdered by the Real IRA in February, and his family had been placed on the back of the wall.

The fire service was called to the scene on Friday night.

Meanwhile, petrol bombs have been thrown at two homes in West End Park. Damage was caused to a patio area and a garden outside one of the houses.

Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle Martina Anderson said the attack on the mural had provoked "shock and anger" in the Bogside community.

She said it had never been vandalised until recently when, she said, a Sinn Fein mural was paint bombed three times in a week.

"At that time, we never made an issue of it. Sadly this attack on the notice board is very worrying and is taking such attacks to a whole new level," she added.
