Pair in second abduction riddle

A couple who tried to abduct a woman in a shopping centre car park may have committed a similar crime earlier in the same day, police believe.

The suspects grabbed a 64-year-old woman at the Forge in Glasgow and tried to push her into her car on 28 May.

It has now emerged the same man and woman may have tried to open a car door in Coatbridge earlier that day.

After exchanging words with the female driver, the pair left the Showcase Cinema Complex car park.

Detectives said the new information was given to them by a witness who came forward in response to an appeal for information about the attack at the Forge.

Det Sgt David Scott, who is leading the inquiry, said: "Around 9 or 9.15am that morning, he witnessed a man and woman of similar description attempt to open the passenger door of a car in McDonald's car park in the Showcase Cinema Complex, Coatbridge.

"To this date no crime has been reported to us by this female driver. Therefore I would appeal to her to come forward as a matter of urgency to let us know what has happened.

"It may be that she actually knew the couple and no crime has taken place, but we naturally have to rule this out.

"Likewise, I would appeal to anyone who was in the Showcase Complex in Coatbridge, particularly McDonald's, around 9am last Friday morning and who saw a couple fitting the description to contact us."

The victim of the Forge attack was said to have been left "extremely traumatised" by her ordeal.

Screamed for help

She had left the Asda store with her shopping bags at about 1230 BST and was opening the door of her Nissan car when the suspects grabbed her and tried to push her into the vehicle.

The woman screamed for help, which caused both suspects to run off along Biggar Street. The last sighting of them was towards the railway bridge in the Duke Street area.

The male suspect was described as being white, about 5ft 10in tall, aged in his 30s and with a clean-shaven but untidy appearance.

He was wearing a beanie hat and a dark coloured long-sleeve top.

His female companion was also white and aged her 30s. She had a suntan, and was slim with dark hair worn in a ponytail.

She was wearing a pink baseball cap and a dark zipped jacket.
