Mother admits baby painkiller death in North Tyneside
A mother has admitted causing the death of her 11-month-old son by giving him a large dose of painkillers.
Mapaseka Justinah Shapung originally faced a murder charge after the body of Themba Bevin was found at her flat in North Shields on New Year's Day.
Her guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility was accepted by prosecutors at Newcastle Crown Court.
The 30-year-old, from Lesotho, southern Africa, was given a hospital order.
The order, under the Mental Health Act, means Shapung, of George Stephenson Way, will not be released until doctors are satisfied it is safe for her to be back in the community.
