A by-election is to take place after a Preston councillor quit "to spend more time with his girlfriend".

Liberal Democrat Liam Pennington, 30, took the city's Riversway ward seat from Labour by four votes on 7 May.

But soon afterwards he quit, saying his constituents deserved more than an "accidental councillor".

Preston City Council announced the by-election will take place on 15 July. Residents have until 30 June to ensure they are on the electoral register.

The deadline for nominations is Friday 18 June.
