The mother of a teenager killed in a car accident has warned of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

Kevin O'Toole, 19, died instantly when he lost control of his car on the Culmore Road in Londonderry last June.

His family found out that mobile phone use had been a contributory factor to the accident at the inquest into his death earlier this week.

"It's so sad that one second of picking a mobile phone off the ground took Kevin's life," said Elizabeth O'Toole.

His mother appealed for people to be more aware of the dangers of mobile phone use while driving.

"Kevin wasn't even going 40mph," she added.

"Kevin never left my driveway without his seatbelt on, and when the phone rang he would never answer it. He never lifted a mobile phone in a car at any time.

"It's just so sad."
