Brighton charity's anger at council billboard ban
A Brighton charity has criticised the city council after it was banned from displaying billboards and hoardings on its side wall.
Community Base, which provides a home to voluntary groups, said it would lose out on rental income from advertisers.
Brighton and Hove Council said adverts would "detract from the character" of the nearby conservation areas.
Colin Chalmer, the charity's director, said the decision "files in the face of common sense".
He added: "We are simply baffled that a community centre trying to keep costs down is prevented from doing so despite having the full support of its neighbours and local community."
A council spokeswoman said: "The main reason was that it was felt the size, location and dominance of the proposed advertisement would detract from the visual amenity of the area."
