Gritting salt stock could double in Staffordshire

Plans are being discussed to double road salt supplies in Staffordshire next winter.

The county council meets later to decide how much to increase its stock by after a national shortage of grit during freezing conditions in January.

Staffordshire was one of many councils with restricted gritting operations because of the shortage.

Officers have recommended the purchase of 30,000 tonnes of grit compared with the 13,500 tonnes bought last year.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said it was also considering raising its salt supplies by two-thirds to 5,000 tonnes next winter.
