Bad weather has delayed the reopening of Middlesbrough's Transporter bridge.

It was due to re-open on Monday but Middlesbrough Council said rain and high winds last week had prevented the installation of electrical equipment.

The Grade II listed structure has been shut since 16 May to allow the replacement of electric motors fitted almost 100 years ago.

The bridge will now reopen at 0700 BST on Wednesday provided satisfactory testing of equipment is completed.

The bridge, which can carry 200 passengers or six cars, at any time, on a suspended gondola, celebrates its centenary next year.

The 225ft (69m) high structure is one of Teesside's most recognisable landmarks and is seen as a symbol of the area's industrial heritage.
