Cyclist's mother appeals over Southampton bridge attack
The mother of a man beaten up on a Southampton bridge has appealed for help in catching her son's attackers.
David Baker, 24, was cycling on Central Bridge on Tuesday at 2340 BST when he was attacked by a group of people.
Jane Hiatt said: "It's been devastating for the family. My son's in intensive care. He's still unconscious and he has very bad head injuries."
Police are continuing to question a 26-year-old Southampton man on suspicion of attempted murder.
An 18-year-old woman, also from Southampton, has been released on bail.
Ms Hiatt said: "Witnesses who may have seen the attack, or know the people responsible for the attack - I'd urge them to contact the police."
Mr Baker is in a serious condition in the neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.
Det Ch Insp Kath Barnes, from Hampshire police, described the attack as "completely unprovoked, unnecessary, and over the top".
Officers want to hear from witnesses, especially anyone who was with the group or spent time with them earlier in the evening.
