Coventry police crash pedestrian, 82, is named

An 82-year-old man who died after being knocked down by a marked police car in Coventry has been named.

Denis Skelley, from the Stoke area of the city, was hit as the vehicle responded to an emergency call on Walsgrave Road last Thursday.

The incident is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Police are conducting an anniversary appeal for witnesses in the area later.

'Many questions'

"This is a tragic incident and I would like to extend my condolences to Mr Skelley's family and friends," an IPCC spokesman said.

"They will no doubt have a great many questions regarding the circumstances that lead to his death and our investigation will gather all the relevant information in order to help provide answers.

"Our investigators will be looking at a number of factors such as the speed of the police car, whether emergency sirens and lighting were being used and whether force policies were being adhered to."

Any witnesses are asked to contact the IPCC.
