Plea after girl indecently assaulted in Cumbernauld

Police are hunting a man who lured a 12-year-old girl with learning difficulties into a close in North Lanarkshire and indecently assaulted her.

The attack happened at about 1545 BST on Thursday on Rowan Road in the Abronhill area of Cumbernauld.

Before the assault the same man was seen nearby helping two other young girls to repair a bicycle.

Detectives said the young victim had suffered a "terrifying ordeal".

They are appealing for witnesses.

The suspect was described as a white, of slim build with dark hair. He was wearing blue denim jeans.

He made off on foot towards Abronhill Town Centre.

Det Insp John Jack from Cumbernauld CID said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the young girl, and I am appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen the suspect to contact us.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who has any information, however trivial, about this incident."
